In order to reduce the emission of soot and other particles of an existing diesel engine a very fine meshed filter is required. Such a filter is to catch almost 100 % of the particles in the exhaust gasses, most of these being soot particles. The soot and other particles would quickly block the filter if not measures would be available to continuously or periodically burn the soot in the filter. The simplest and most effective way to do this is by using a CRT filter. This Continuously Regenerating Trap uses a catalyst that helps produce oxygen for the combustion of the soot and at the same time drastically reduces hydrocarbons (HC) and carbon monoxide (CO). The CRT filter however requires a minimum temperature profile of the exhaust gasses.
